Sticky fingers, tired feet, one last house, Trick or Treat – Rusty Fischer
I recently messaged my sister and asked her to dig out all the old photo albums at my parents house. I live quite far away (read 100+ miles) so the photo’s are not something I see all the time.
I wanted to write a post all about my childhood Halloween costumes. I used to love Halloween as a child although at some point throughout the years my opinion has very much changed and now I can’t leave the house on the day through fear. Fear of what I’m not quite sure. In the run up to Halloween I’m an anxious mess and I can barely function on the day. I want to document the memories from when I was younger as a way to focus on the fun aspects. I want Emily to enjoy all the festivities and to do that I need to overcome my fears.
When I was really young I remember I wanted to be a ghost every single year. I would dress in a white dress, white cardigan, white tights, white shoes and paint my face white. I would often take my white teddy out with me too. My brother would be something different every year (one year specifically a bogie monster) but I was always consistent in my want to be a ghost. I couldn’t find the photo to go with this outfit but it’s the first photo that came into my mind when I thought of the idea for this post. I’m sure I’ll recreate it with Emily for one of her first costumes too!
The next costume I remember wearing is a witches outfit. I remember me and my sister used to quite like matching for a while so we both dressed as witches. We had a few different witch dresses but the masks were consistent each year. We even had little brooms to ride around the streets on! The masks were a little uncomfortable from what I remember and used to get quite hot and sweaty. As you can see from the photo, they didn’t quite fit onto our heads properly. I don’t think Grace could even see through hers.
After a while we didn’t like to match anymore and we went our own separate ways costume wise.
The last one I’m going to mention is this (I think) skeleton? I don’t recall ever wearing this one but there’s a photo of it so I must have done! I think both the costume and mask are hand me downs from my older brother. I definitely remember him being a skeleton on more than one occasion and this masks seems to shout ‘bogie monster’ in my mind. The only reason I knew this photo was me is that I can see my hair poking out from behind the mask, otherwise I would have definitely said this was someone else!
What costumes did you wear when you were younger? Are you a Halloween lover or hater?
